River Loop
Day Tripping on the Upper Miss

It’s easy to spend a day exploring these stretches of the Upper Mississippi. In each of our “River Loops” columns we’ll prowl a stretch of the river for interesting places and things to do.

North Minneapolis to Coon Rapids Dam

The trip upriver from downtown Minneapolis to the Coon Rapids Dam is only 12 miles, but in this short stretch the river changes dramatically in several ways.

St. Anthony Falls, in downtown Minneapolis, marks the transition from the gorge that begins at the falls to the prairie river above the falls, where the high bluffs quickly melt away.
