Big River Voice

Big River Voice creates informed and engaged communities through education and outreach in a 400 mile stretch of the Upper Mississippi River Valley and its tributaries. Through regional journalism, community meetings and events, and partnerships with organizations we focus on a healthier future for the land, the environment, and the people in our region.

Mission

Vision

A healthier Upper Mississippi River through engaged communities connected by quality regional journalism.

Statement of Need

While we live in a time of information glut, the amount of well-researched local and regional journalism is disappearing at an alarming rate. The decrease in journalism mirrors a society that is less connected and less informed about the issues that face their own communities. Big River Voice connects people interested in the issues facing the Upper Mississippi River. Education, resources, on-going networking, and hands-on opportunities are all tools that can ensure that strong communities can continue to thrive and grow into the future. Big River Voice needs to increase its capacity to lead through five major areas.

Goals

  1. Connect and inspire communities to be stewards of the Upper Mississippi River and its tributaries.

  2. Advocate, educate, and nurture regional journalism.

  3. Seek resources and knowledge to develop infrastructure and partnerships toward strengthening the long-term viability of the organization.

Praise for Big River Magazine

  • Your publication sits on our coffee table and we feel it is an extremely meaningful endeavor in a world of journalistic drivel. My heartful thanks to you for your efforts.

    — Kathleen

  • I enjoy your magazine very much. My sister comes out every Fall and we travel the river exploring all the riches that the old man holds. Your magazine is the map that I use to travel its secret passages. Thank you!

    — Mary, Sparta, WI

  • Keep up your fine work. It’s a joy to see what has emerged from the humble beginnings decades ago.

    — Paul, Palm Coast, FL

  • I really appreciate your bi-monthly magazine. I am a retired Iowa DNR wildlife biologist that worked pools 12-14 of the Mississippi River for 32 years. Your magazine sheds light on a host of watershed and landscape topics that keep me informed and entertained.
