Carp Poetry Contest

The First Big River Poetry Contest

We have a new scheme to popularize the queen of the river. Big River has never in its 22-year history published a poem, but we are making an exception to hold our first Carp Poetry Contest and what may be the first carp poetry contest in the history of carp, thanks to a creative suggestion from a Quad Cities friend.

Though carp are feared and maligned in our otherwise great nation, this magnificent fish is held in high esteem in most of the world. Asian artists have created beautiful paintings of carp for centuries. Carp poems are not uncommon. Just google “carp poem.” (I recommend “The Carp,” by Yun Wang.) The grace, heft and toothsomeness of carp cries out for poetry.

Enter in any of three categories: haiku, limerick and other (100-word maximum). The winner in each category will receive a Big River Carp Club t-shirt, a one-year subscription to Big River and his/her poem will appear in the July-August 2015 issue of Big River.

Submissions must be received by May 1, 2015, at either
editors@BigRiverMagazine.com or
Big River Poetry, PO Box 204, Winona, MN 55987.
Submissions will not be returned and Big River reserves the right to publish any submissions. Employees of Big River are ineligible.
